Explanation
Anklets, payal (pronounced with a long a, like paayal) ; in Telugu, pattelu.
the bells that a woman wears on her ankles.
The very name Payal conjures up mystery - romance – excitement – the old-world charm and old movies like – Bees Saal Baad and Mughal e Asaam - comes to mind all in that order!
Hindustani classical music has dozens of compositions based on the sound of the Payals.
Jhanaka Jhanaka Payal baaje
Chum chananana nana Payal baaje – and so many more beautiful compositions – all haunting ones.
Payals are worn by girls especially on their wedding day – and generally in silver.
The pure gold payals are to be worn only by the royal family . . .
There is a beautiful Tamil epic called – Silapathikaram – all about the anklet – a moving tale of love and courage.

spring dawn ~
ancient anklets sparkle
silent fairy tales
twilight sun
hesitates, listening to
anklets approaching
anklets walk on ~
all people turn around
to seek the dancer
autumn dreams
after the crisp thillana,
the silent anklets
Thillana
A type of Dance composition performed in Bharata Naatyam at the end of the dance recital. This genre is very highly Thaal[am] based and done in intricate fast tempo with various rhythmic variations. With this the dancer exhausts her[his] talents into fatigue. and after a brief prayer retreats . Thillana can easily be appreciated by a general audience since it is movement and fury and the dancer's skills are self-evident.
