Sukhna Lake

Explanation
quote
Sukhna Lake(Hindi: सुख़ना) in Chandigarh,
India is an artificial lake at the foothills of the Himalayas, the Shivalik hills. This 3 km² rainfed lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills. Originally the seasonal flow entered the lake directly causing heavy siltation. To check the inflow of silt, 25.42 km² of land was acquired in the catchment area and put under vegetation. In 1974, the Choe was diverted and made to bypass the lake completely, the lake being fed by three siltation pots, minimising the entry of silt into the lake itself.
The creation of the lake was one of the greatest gifts from Le Corbusier and the Chief Engineer P L Verma to the city of Chandigarh. To preserve its tranquility Corbusier insisted that it be forbidden to motor boats and the top of the dam (promenade) prohibited to vehicular traffic. The lake is fringed by a golf course to the south, and Nek Chand's famous Rock Garden of Chandigarh to its west.

Guru Nanak Gurpurab also known as Guru Nanak's Prakash Utsav, celebrates the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. This is one of the most sacred festivals in Sikhism. Apart from Sikhs, Hindus and other followers of Guru Nanak's philosophy also celebrate this festival.
The festivities in the Sikh religion revolve around the anniversaries of the 10 Sikh Gurus. These Gurus were responsible for shaping the beliefs of the Sikhs. Their birthdays, known as Gurpurab (or Gurpurb), are occasions for celebration and prayer among the Sikhs.

Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was born on 15 April 1469 in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present Shekhupura District of Pakistan, now Nankana Sahib. His birth is celebrated on Kartik Poornima, i.e., the day of the full moon in the month of Kartik. In the Gregorian Calendar, the celebration usually falls in the month of November, but its date varies from year to year, based on the traditional dates of the Indian calendar.
Vela.
The day begins with the singing of Asa-di-Var (morning hymns).
This is followed by any combination of Katha (exposition of the scripture) and Kirtan (hymns from the Sikh scriptures), in the praise of the Guru.
Following that is the Langar, a special community lunch, which is arranged at the Gurudwaras by volunteers. The idea behind the free communal lunch is that everyone, irrespective of caste, class or creed, should be offered food in the spirit of seva (service) and bhakti (devotion).

Haiku in Punjabi - Angelee Deodhar
The origin of haiku in Punjabi begins with Prof Puran Singh’s translation of Hokku by Basho, Issa and Buson and his own collection of hokku Achan Chet Udarian in the early 20th century.
Then many poets came to write haiku in Hindi and Punjabi, chief among these was Prof Satya Bhushan Varma, the first Indian scholar of Japanese, who was a pioneer of haiku in several languages. He started the first haiku club in India and began publishing haiku in Hindi, Punjabi and several other Indian languages, in a bimonthly inland format called Haiku Patrika in the seventies.
Mr Satyanand Java, Satyapaul Chugh, Urmila Kaul, Mohan Ktiyal and Devki Aggarwal were well known for their Punjabi haiku. Amrita Pritam translated some haiku into Punjabi in a journal called Nagmani.
In 2000 Mr.Kashmiri Lal Chawla who was influenced by Hindi haiku founded the Muktsar group of poets to write haiku in Panjabi.
Around 2000 in Punjab, haiku was introduced by Parminder Sodhi in his book of translations of Japanese haiku Japani Haiku Shairi .
Mr. Amarjit Sathi Tiwana greatly influenced by Mr.Sodhi’s book, started writing and promoting Punjabi haiku in 2003 and created a Panjabi Haiku Blog in 2007 (haikupunjabi.wordpress.com). In this online project he introduces contemporary and classic haiku from around the world to speakers of Punjabi daily. There are 5 editors and over 200 contributors.
In 2007 he also started the Punjabi haiku group on Facebook which has 8 Admins and about 2000 members. From Punjabi Haiku Group on Facebook developed the Punjabi Haiku forum. Mr Tiwana has taken the promotion of haiku as his life work.
In 2008 he brought out his first book of haiku Nimakh (time taken to blink an eye) and poet Iqbal Deep brought out his collection Kshin.
In 2009, Mr Davinder Poonia published Kaniyaan and Mr.Amarjit Sathi Tiwana along with poet Gurpreet his second book Harey Harey Taarey, a collection of 135 children’s haiku from around the world. This book has been placed in many schools in Bhatinda and Mansa districts of Punjab and distributed free to introduce school children to haiku.
There are several other blogs and individual pages of poets writing haiku in Punjabi, but nothing on an organized or regular basis.
In 2010, the world's second online Panjabi book Trale Tupke was released - is a Haiku Shayari written by Mohan Gill which has about four hundred haiku in it.
In 2010, the Panjabi Haiku Forum in collaboration with the Department of Punjabi at the Punjabi University, Patiala organized the First International Punjabi Haiku Conference. A trilingual book in English, Hindi and Punjabi Blue Sky Ringing by the American poet John Brandi, with a Panjabi translation by Amarjit Sathi and translated into Hindi by Angelee Deodhar was released on this occasion, also Mr Gurmeet Sandhu’s Khiwan and Darbara Singh’s Pal Khin.
On 8th March, the International Women’s Day, the Second International Punjabi Haiku conference was held at the Punjabi University, Patiala where poets from India and abroad came to share their haiku and its related forms. The inaugural session of the conference was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the university Dr. Jaspal Singh and Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana, a famous Punjabi novelist.
Five books of haiku were released on this occasion :
Haiku Bodh (Haiku Primer) by Mr Amarjit Sathi Tiwana.
Lishk by Mr Darbara Singh,
Namolian by Ms Arvinder Kaur,
One Moment Collection of Haikus, a trilingual book edited
and published by Dr. Mandeep Mann
Sargi Vela by Mr.Kanwaljit Mangat.
Of these the most significant one is the Haiku Bodh (Haiku Primer)
by Mr Amarjit Sathi Tiwana. This book is the first of its kind and will be useful in introducing the novice poet to haiku and its related forms in Panjabi.
All the delegates were given a trilingual copy of the conference anthology containing 114 haiku by 38 poets.
The audience for haiku is large. There are 120 million Punjabi speakers, 80 million in Pakistan, 20-25 million in India and the rest spread around the world.
Today, a decade after its origin, Punjabi haiku has come into its own and one can read it at various sites. There is no formal Punjabi haiku society and no membership fees. All the efforts to propagate haiku in Punjabi have been consistently made
by Mr Amarjit Sathi Tiwana, who has spent a lot of his own money to make books of haiku available in schools and libraries of various colleges and universities.
However what is needed today is a bilingual/ trilingual approach so that Punjabi haiku can reach a much larger audience. We must aim at a bilingual English- Punjabi web presence (site or blog) and make books which are bilingual, so that English language poets abroad and poets from other parts of India can understand the Punjabi haiku.

Lohri festival

Explanation
quote
Lohri (Punjabi: ਲੋਹੜੀ (Gurmukhi), लोहड़ी (Devanagari), لوہڑی (Shahmukhi)) is an extremely popular festival celebrated by the Punjabi people. This agricultural winter festival is celebrated in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttrakhand and Jammu.
The origins of Lohri are many and link the festival to Punjab. Many people believe the festival was originally celebrated on winter solstice day, being the shortest day and the longest night of the year. With time, the festival spread to the states adjoining Punjab - Sindh, Jammu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.
Indian origins
There are many origins of Lohri: all forming part of folklore. However, the main theme of Lohri is the belief that Lohri is the cultural celebration of the winter solstice. Lohri is meant to be celebrated on the shortest day of the year. A key feature of Lohri is the bonfire. Lighting of the fire has been common in winter solstice festivals throughout time: it signifies the return of longer days. For some the bonfire has a religious meaning, a remnant of pagan origins, perhaps? For others, the bonfire is no more than a tradition.
Going forward, instead of celebrating Lohri on the day winter solstice occurs, Punjabis celebrate it on the last day of the month during which winter solstice takes place. This is due to linking Lohri to the Bikrami calendar and the twinning of the festival with Makar Sankranti.
According to folk lore, in ancient times Lohri was celebrated on winter solstice day. It is for this reason that people believe the Lohri night is meant to be the longest night of the year and on the day after Lohri, day light is meant to increase. The day after Lohri is celebrated as Makar Sankranti when the days are meant to start getting longer.

However, scientifically, the shortest day of the year is around December 21–22 after which the days begin to get longer. Accordingly, winter solstice begins on December 21 or December 22 and Lohri ought to be celebrated on the day of winter solstice.

Makara Sankranti is one of the most auspicious occasions for the Hindus, and is celebrated in almost all parts of India and Nepal in a myriad of cultural forms, with great devotion, fervour, and gaiety. It is a harvest festival.
Makara means Capricorn Zodiac Sign and Sankranti means transition of the Sun from one zodiac sign to another. Thus Makar Sankranti is the day that marks the transition of the Sun into Makara rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path. The day is also believed to mark the arrival of spring in India.
Makara Sankranti is a solar event making it perhaps the only Indian festival whose date always falls on the same date on Gregorian calender every year: 14 January, with some exceptions, when the festival is celebrated on 13 January or 15 January.

The Punjab
( Punjabi: ਪੰਜਾਬ, پنجاب, Urdu: پنجاب, Hindi: पंजाब),
also spelled Panjab (Persian: پنجاب, panj-āb, "five waters"),

Barah Maha (ਬਾਰਹ ਮਾਹਾ) The Twelve Months
. WKD : Barah Maha .
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
quote
BARAH MAHA or BARAH MASA (in Hindi),
is a form of folk poetry in which the emotions and yearnings of the human heart are expressed in terms of the changing moods of Nature over the twelve months of the year. In this form of poetry, the mood of Nature in each particular month (of the Indian calendar) depicts the inner agony of the human heart which in most cases happens to be a woman separated from her spouse or lover.
In other words, the separated woman finds her own agony reflected in the different faces of Nature. The tradition of Barah Maha poetry is traceable to classical epochs. In Sanskrit, the Barah Maha had the form of shad ritu varnan, i.e. description of the six seasons (shad = six; ritu = season; varnan = description), the most wellknown example being Kalidasa's Ritu Sanhar. The mode was commonly employed to depict the moods of the love stricken woman in separation, and it became an established vogue in medieval Indian poetry. Modern languages of northern India claim several distinguished models. In Hindi, the first instance of this poetic form occurs in Malik Muhammad Jayasi's Padmavat.
In Punjabi, Guru Nanak's Barah Maha in the measure Tukhari is not only the oldest composition belonging to this genre but also the first in which the theme of love poetry has been transformed into that of spiritual import. He made the human soul the protagonist which suffers in the cesspool of transmigration as a result of its separation from the Supreme Soul. This is followed by Guru Arjan's Barah Maha.
Later some Sufi poets such as 'Ali Haider, Bulleh Shah, Hasham and Shah Murad also wrote barah mahas. Haflz Barkhurdar was the first poet in the Punjabi romantic tradition to compose a barah maha as an independent work. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, there were a number of barah mahas and siharffs written in Punjabi. Poetry in this class can be broadly divided into various types religious, farmers' narrative (included in an epic poem), viraha (separation) and 'trial of chastity* variety. Guru Arjan's Barah Maha falls in the viraha category, depicting through the twelve months the pangs of the bride, i.e. the human soul separated from her Divine Essence.

Beas River

Explanation
quote
The Beas River
(or Vipasha, Hindi: ब्यास, Punjabi: ਬਿਆਸ, Sanskrit: विपाशा) is a river in the northern part of India. The river rises in the Himalayas in central Himachal Pradesh, India, and flows for some 470 km (290 miles) to the Sutlej River in the Indian state of Punjab.

Etymology
The river was also known as Arjikuja of the Vedas, or
Vipasa to the ancient Indians, and the Hyphasis to the Ancient Greeks.
The present name "Beas" is thought to be a corruption of the older name and original name "Vipasha" in Sanskrit. The river got this name, Vi-pasha, the "one who removed the bondage" (or pasha in Sanskrit).
According to ancient texts, the river was named after sage Vasistha. Vasistha, tried to end his life due to the death of his 100 sons, by jumping into this river and tying himself. But as soon as the sage fell into the river, all the knots got untied, and he did not die. The river is also referred to as Vipasha in Himachal, especially by the scholars.
It is said that Beas is a misnomer for Vayasa (exchange of B with V and always truncation of the last vowel is common in North Indian languages) and is named after Veda Vyasa, the presiding patron of the river; he is said to have created it from its source lake, the Vyas Kund.

They have an intense, almost magical sweet scent when they blossom at night.
The tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa)
is a perennial plant related to the agaves, extracts of which are used as a middle note in perfumery. The common name derives from the Latin tuberosa, meaning swollen or tuberous in reference to its root system. It consists of about 12 species. Polianthes means "many flowers" in Greek language.
The tuberose is a night-blooming plant thought to be native to Mexico along with every other species of Polianthes. It grows in elongated spikes up to 45 cm (18 in) long that produce clusters of fragrant waxy white flowers that bloom from the bottom towards the top of the spike. It has long, bright green leaves clustered at the base of the plant and smaller, clasping leaves along the stem.

Members of the closely related genus Manfreda are often called "tuberoses".

Rakhi, is a festival primarily observed in India, which celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters. It is also called Rakhi Purnima in most of India. It is also celebrated in some parts of Pakistan. The festival is observed by Hindus, Sikhs and some Muslims.

The central ceremony involves the tying of a rakhi (sacred thread) by a sister on her brother's wrist. This symbolizes the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-being, and the brother's lifelong vow to protect her.
The festival falls on the full moon day (Shravan Poornima) of the Shravan month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar.
It grew in popularity after Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen of Chittor, sent a rakhi to the Mughal emperor Humayun when she required his help.

Explanation
quote

Dargah Sufi Islamic Shrine
***** Location: India
***** Season: Topic
***** Category: Humanity
*****************************
Explanation
A Dargah (Persian: درگاه dargâh or درگه dargah)
is a Sufi Islamic shrine built over the grave of a revered religious figure, often a Sufi saint or dervish. Local Muslims may visit a shrine as a form of pilgrimage known as ziyarat. Dargahs are often associated with Sufi meeting rooms and hostels, called khanqah.
They usually include a mosque, meeting rooms, Islamic religious schools (madrassas), residences for a teacher or caretaker, hospitals, and other buildings for community purposes.

The Dargah of Haji Ali, in Mumbai.
The term dargah is derived from a Persian word which can mean, among other uses, "portal" or "threshold". Some Sufi and other Muslims believe that dargahs are portals by which they can invoke the deceased saint's intercession and blessing (as per tawassul). Still others hold a less supernatural view of dargahs, and simply visit as a means of paying their respects to deceased pious individuals or to pray at the sites for perceived spiritual benefits.

Sufism
Sufism or taṣawwuf (Arabic: تصوّف) is defined by its adherents as the inner, mystical dimension of Islam. A practitioner of this tradition is generally known as a ṣūfī (صُوفِيّ). Sufis believe they are practicing Ihsan (perfection of worship) as revealed by Gabriel to Muhammad,
"Worship and serve Allah as you are seeing Him and while you see Him not yet truly He sees you."
Classical Sufi scholars have defined Sufism as "a science whose objective is the reparation of the heart and turning it away from all else but God".
Alternatively, in the words of the Darqawi Sufi teacher Ahmad ibn Ajiba, "a science through which one can know how to travel into the presence of the Divine, purify one's inner self from filth, and beautify it with a variety of praiseworthy traits".

The Guru tells us that the month of
Sawan (July/August) and Bhadon (August/September):
"The rainy season is beautiful; the months of Saawan and Bhaadon bring bliss. The clouds are low, and heavy with rain; the waters and the lands are filled with honey. God is all-pervading everywhere; the nine treasures of the Lord's Name fill the homes of all hearts…"
(p 928) and also
"...The lakes and fields are overflowing with water; the rainy season has come - the time to celebrate! In the dark of night it rains; how can the young bride find peace? The frogs and peacocks send out their noisy calls. Pri-o! Pri-o! Beloved! Beloved! cries the rainbird, while the snakes slither around, biting. The mosquitoes bite and sting, and the ponds are filled to overflowing; without the Lord, how can she find peace?
O Nanak, I will go and ask my Guru; wherever God is, there I will go.

Kala chana chickpeas
***** Location: India

Explanation
quote
The chickpea (Cicer arietinum)
is a legume of the family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. Its seeds are high in protein Despite being widely considered a vegetable, it is in fact one of the earliest cultivated fruits; 7,500-year-old remains have been found in the Middle East.
Other common names for the species include
garbanzo bean, ceci bean, chana, sanagalu, and Bengal gram.

There are two main kinds of chickpea:
Desi, which has small, darker seeds and a rough coat, cultivated mostly in the Indian subcontinent, Ethiopia, Mexico, and Iran.
Kabuli, which has lighter coloured, larger seeds and a smoother coat, mainly grown in Southern Europe, Northern Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Chile, also introduced during the 18th century to the Indian subcontinent.
The Desi (meaning 'country' or 'local' in Hindi) is also known as Bengal gram or kala chana. Kabuli (meaning 'from Kabul' in Hindi, since they were thought to have come from Afghanistan when first seen in India) or safed chana is the kind widely grown throughout the Mediterranean.
Desi is likely the earliest form since it closely resembles seeds found both on archaeological sites and the wild plant ancestor (Cicer reticulatum) of domesticated chickpeas, which only grows in southeast Turkey, where it is believed to have originated.
Desi chickpeas have a markedly higher fiber content than Kabulis and hence a very low glycemic index which may make them suitable for people with blood sugar problems. The desi type is used to make Chana Dal, which is a split chickpea with the skin removed.

Prasād, Prasada
(Sanskrit: प्रसाद, Marathi: प्रसाद, Hindi/Urdu: प्रशाद/پرشاد/prashad, Kannada: prasāda ಪ್ರಸಾದ, Gujarati: પૃસાદ, Tamil: பிரசாதம் and prasādam,
Punjabi: ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ, Telugu: Telugu: ప్రసాదం prasadam, Bhojpuri: persādi)
is a material substance that is first offered to a deity in Hinduism and then consumed.
Literally, a gracious gift.
Anything, usually an edible food, that is first offered to a deity, saint, Perfect Master or an Avatar and then distributed in His or Her name to their followers or others as a good sign. The prasad is then considered to have the deity's blessing residing within it.
In contemporary Hindu religious practice in India, the desire to get prasada and have darshan are the two major motivations of pilgrimage and temple visits.

One way that Prasad is commonly prepared is to place the food in offering before an image or statue of the spiritual figure to be honored, sometimes on a plate or serving vessel reserved only for spiritual purposes, and only then, after some time is allowed to pass, does the food become holy Prasad for further distribution.
