This was the day when Krishna-dwaipayana Vyasa – author of the Mahabharata – was born. Veda Vyasa, did yeoman service to the cause of Vedic studies by gathering all the Vedic hymns extant during his times, dividing them into four parts based on their use in the sacrificial rites, and teaching them to his four chief disciples – Paila, Vaisampayana, Jaimini and Sumantu. It was this dividing and editing that earned him the honorific "Vyasa" (vyas = to edit, to divide).

The importance of a Guruji [teacher] can never be over emphasized.

Any art form is a life pursuit and Indian music and dance were mostly oral traditions passed down from generation to generation through the guru-sishya parampara [teacher-student traditions].

Students belonging to all art forms pay their respects to their Guruji on Guru Poornima in North India and on Vijaya Dasami day in South India respectively.

Concerts are arranged by students, who perform before their Guru.
Fruits and flowers – even money is showered on Gurus on this day.
When there is admiration – then reverence is the natural outcome.

India has always shown respect to age and knowledge- and what better day could there be?

Children learn their first alphabets on Vijaya Dasami day. New ventures are begun on that day.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The literal meaning of the word ‘avatara’ is descent. It is no physical climb down however, but rather akin to the teacher, who, when instructing small children, has to come down to the "level" of the child, hold his hand and teach him how to write the alphabet. This is the teacher’s avatara in front of the child.

A good guru too is one who first gets down to the level of his disciple’s ability of understanding and grants him knowledge accordingly.

Japan

Sensei 先生 (せんせい) seems the equivalent for a venerated master or teacher.
Literally, it means "the one born before me".

. WKD : Sensei, a haiku teacher .

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The meaning of Sensei
In Japan anyone who teaches anything is called sensei.
A young kindergarten teacher of 20 years old can be addressed as sensei by a parent of 50 years old because the parent appreciates the fact that the young teacher is teaching the child. This is similar to using the Mr, Miss or Ms - it merely indicates respect toward the person. In Japan a lawyer or a doctor is normally called sensei because they are supposed to know more than others. Since lawyers often become politicians, even politicians are often called sensei. It is true that in Japan the word sensei is sometimes abused. In general however, a Japanese teacher is usually addressed as sensei by his students all over the world.

Malaysia

May 16
This date was chosen because on the same day in 1956, the Federal Legislative Council of the Federation of Malaya endorsed the Razak Report, one of four reports of the Education Committee regarding education in Malaysia. The document, known as the Razak Report after Tun Abdul Razak who was Education Minister at the time, has been the basis of education in Malaysia ever since.
Although it is not an official school holiday, celebrations are usually held on May 16, or earlier, if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday.

Teacher's Day,
Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan Memorial Day

Kigo for Autumn

September 5th is Teacher's Day in India.
It is the birthday of former Indian president and a teacher himself: Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the president of India in 1962, some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate 5th September, his "birthday".
In reply, Dr, Radhakrishnan said, "Instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' Day".

This is not a holiday in India; It's called a celebration day where teachers and students report to school as usual but the usual activities are replaced by a mood of celebration, thanking and remembrance. At some schools on this day, the responsibility of teaching is taken up by the senior students as an appreciation for their teachers.

Traditionally, people in India have given tremendous respect and honor for teachers. In fact an old Indian saying (usually taught to children), ranks teacher in the third place, even before God: "Maata, Pitha, Guru, Daivam", meaning Mother, Father, Teacher and God.

There is another saying in the form of a couplet (doha), which goes, "Guru Govind doou khare kake lagon paai? Balihari guru aap ki Govind deeo batai." meaning- I am in a fix whom to salute first: the teacher or the God. I shall choose the teacher as he is the one who is instrumental in my knowing God.

As the central piece in Hindu scriptures go - 'Guru Bramha, Guru Vishnu, Guru devo Maheshwaraha - Gurusakshath parabramha tasmai shree gurve namaha -
Teacher is the holy Trinity. Teacher is the manifestation of the lord himself.

Today is Teacher's Day. September 5th happens to be the birthday day of Dr. S Radhakrishnan, the philosopher-statesman. He was India’s second President after the tenure of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Radhakrishnan, besides being a leading philosopher of the world, was a teacher, too. In order to honour this worthy son of India, September 05 is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India. Dr. Radhakrishan was born in the year 1888.

The importance of a teacher in one’s life is needless to be emphasized. Everybody remembers the touch of the soft and affectionate hand that helps a kid's tender fingers to write the first alphabet. It is rightly said, ‘A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way of others.’ Teachers ignite the fire that is hidden in each of us. We in India are fortunate to have godly teachers. Our school teachers, often poor though, considered the profession as noble. That has made a great difference in everyone’s life. In pre-independence India they could light the flame of patriotism in young minds.

The memory of the school and the teachers in our early life choke us and guide our day to day activities. The Teacher’s Day is celebrated in each and every school. The children take part in debate, senior students take the roles of teachers to teach lower classes, perform cultural activities and often take out processions to impress upon the society the importance of education and the need to respect the teachers.

On this auspicious day let us honour our teachers and greet the teaching fraternity for their noble contribution to our society.

Goa Carnival

Explanation

Carnival, Carneval, Carnaval
25th to 28th February
Make a date with GOA !!

The most vibrant and colorful of all GOA festivals is the CARNIVAL or CARNAVAL [as the locals call it] which offers four days of unbridled fun and feasting.

Following a decree from a mock sovereign, King MOMO, Goa breaks out into a riot of color, music, dance and healthy fun!

The CARNIVAL is kicked off with the staging of a massive and glittering RIO-STYLE FLOATS parade in the GOAN Capital- PANAJI . The celebrations then spill over to every town and village in GOA , with street plays, traditional CARNIVAL dances, costumes parties and entertainment extravaganzas becoming a daily feature!

One of the most popular festivals of India, the Goa carnival, a three-day fest, had its birth in Goa during the era of King Momo. He ushered in the Goa carnival just before the Lent season (Lent is the period of fasting and penance in the Christian calendar and corresponding somewhat to the Mohammedan fast before Ramzan Id).

This festival of Goa usually starts off on Sabado Gordo (Fat Saturday) and concludes on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday) - the eve of Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of the season of Lent.

Originination Of The Festivity

The Goa Carnival is an integral part of the Portuguese heritage of the state, which was a dominion of Portugal till 1961. The carnival epitomizes the fun-loving culture that is characteristic of Goa.

It was introduced by the erstwhile rulers as a rowdy celebration in which flour, eggs, oranges, lemons, mud, sand-filled gloves along with dirty water, various liquids and glue were aimed at passersby. Used pots, pans, and other kitchen utensils were also thrown out of windows. Perhaps this was done to discard the old and the dirty before the Lenten fast.

Fierce battles were waged in the streets, with plaster-of-Paris eggs, wax lemons, corncobs and beans. Blows were dealt out liberally, with brooms and wooden spoons. It was also an occasion for unchecked eating. People gorged on rich food at lavish feasts, and convents distributed cakes and pastries.

Though celebrated for only three days, the preparations for the festival would take many days, and build up to a frenetic pitch by the eve of the carnival. The carnival in Goa still retains the core of the original. A King of Chaos is elected, called King "Momo". He presides over the three-day festivities, which attract visitors from all over India and abroad.

Fun And Frolic In Goa

February heralds the Carnival, three days of abandon and hig spirits before the austerities of the 40-day lent begin in Goa. For three fun-filled days and nights, the legendary king Memo takes over the state and the streets are alive with colourful revelry.

Dancing, music, eating and drinking continue all night while mock battles are fought and a procession of floats and banner wends its way through trunk roads. Dancers bring great scene of pageantry to Goa, with the red and black dancers of Panjim being a highlight of the Carnival which attracts hoards of India and foreign tourists every year.

The Carnival is a wonderfully festive manifestation of the gregarious nature and spirit which characterises the Goan community. The typical guitar music with its enticing rhythm and harmony, heard all over Goa, is part of the rich musical heritage adopted from Portugal. It has further strengthened the distinctive identity of this region.

The mingling of eastern and western cultures has created a truly rich synthesis.

He died at Sancian in the year 1552 on the 3rd of December while he was waiting for a boat that would agree to take him to mainland China.

He was first buried on a beach of Shangchuan Island. In 2006, on the 500th anniversary of his birth, the Xavier Tomb Monument and Chapel on the island, in ruins after years of neglect under communist rule in China was restored with the support from the alumni of Wah Yan College, a Jesuit high school in Hong Kong. His incorrupt body was taken from the island in February 1553 and was temporarily buried in St. Paul's church in Malacca on 22 March, 1553. An open grave in the church now marks the place of Xavier's burial. Pereira came back from Goa, removed the corpse shortly after April 15, 1553, and moved it to his house.

On 11 December, 1553, Xavier's body was shipped to Goa.
The body is now in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, where it was placed in a glass container encased in a silver casket on December 2, 1637.

Explanation

Ganesh, Ganesha, Lord Of The Ganas

He is the divine elephant headed God [Gaja-aanana] of Hindu mysticism and Religion.
Yoga Tantra and Vedas and Puranas mention his deeds and Mantrams associated with him. He is Pranava Swaroopa [The Divine Form of Pranava Om] and Moolaadhara Kshethra Nivaasi {of Yoga and Tantra]. According to Puranic accounts Ganapathy is the Metaphysical son of Shiva and Paarvathi. He wards of all obstacles and hence called Vighneswara.
He is worshipped all over India and even outside.
Cracking a coconut to Ganapathy is a special ritual.

One of the most popular Gods in India, lord Ganesh or Ganpati is considered a symbol of wisdom and a bringer of good luck. It is said that his elephant head epitomises everything related to wisdom-small shrewd eyes, long ears that miss nothing, a long nose that can smell out anything fight and his vehicle, a mouse, reflects how much importance a wise man gives to the smallest of life forms.

On the occasion of the Ganpati festival a large number of images are made of all possible sizes, and people buy them to keep in their houses as a divine guest for one and a half, five, seven, or ten days, after which the image is taken out ceremoniously and thrown into the river, sea or well for immersion or "visarjan". When he is immersed in the water, people sing,

"GANPATI BAPPA MORYA, AGLE BARAS TO JALDI AA,"

("father Ganpati, next year come again")

Sculptures of Ganesha
Paintings of Lord Ganesha

Ganesha is usually depicted either as a pictograph or as an idol with the body of a man and the head of an elephant, having only one tusk, the other tusk appearing broken. His unique feature, besides the elephant head, is the large belly practically falling over his lower garment. On his chest, across his left shoulder, is his sacred thread, often in the form of a snake. The vehicle of Ganesha is the mouse, often seen paying obeisance to his lord.

Ganesha is the ONLY god to be associated in a "physical" sense with the primordial sacred sound AUM, a telling reminder of his supreme position in the Hindu pantheon.

Ganpati Festival

The annual festival in honor of Ganesh or Ganapati, the elephant-headed deity who is known as the remover of obstacles and the god of auspiciousness, has been observed for at least 250 years, and perhaps at least since the twelfth century. It was at first an affair that lasted for two days or less, but by the middle part of the eighteenth century, in the reign of Madhavrao (1761-72), it began to be celebrated over six days. The modern history of the Ganapati festival dates back to 1894, when the Maratha politician and Indian nationalist, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, lionized as Lokamanya, or "Beloved of the People", gave it a distinct political face.

Though the festival had largely been a private affair, where each family purchased an idol of Ganesh and then took it out in procession on Ganesh Chaturthi before immersing it in the river, pond, or tank, it had not been without its public and community aspect, since often several families joined in the procession, or otherwise pooled together their resources to buy a larger-sized idol.

But one of Tilak’s achievements was to make the Ganapati festival the vehicle, so to speak, for the aspirations of the Maratha people as well as those of other Indians who desired independence from British tutelage. Henceforth, the Ganapati festival was to become a largely public affair.

In its present form, the Ganapati festival, which is best observed in Pune or Bombay (now Mumbai), retains to a very large degree the characteristics with which it was endowed by Tilak. The festival is observed for ten days, and immersions of the deity are carried out over the last twenty-four hours of the festival, and the honor of the last immersions, when immense crowds are gathered, falls to the most well-known or affluent communities.

Pavilions are put up by various communities, residential blocks, streets, markets, wealthy merchants or industrialists, and organizations, and an image, usually quite lavish, of Ganesh is placed on each mandap.

Om Shri Ganeshay Namoh...
(Salutations to Lord Ganesh)

Today (Sep 09, 2013) is Ganesh Chaturthi, an auspicious day in Indian calendar to offer prayers to Lord Ganesh who not only fulfills everybody's wishes but also removes all the obstacles from the path. He is the Lord who stands for wisdom and learning.

It can be seen that next to Lord Krishna, Ganesh is the most popular god followed by Lord Hanuman. In eight of his incarnations Lord Ganesh has eliminated eight demons: Matsarasur (demon of jealousy) as Vakratunda, Madasura (demon of vanity) as Ekdanta, Moho (attachment) as Mohadara, Lobha (greed) as Gajanana, Krodha (anger) as Lambodara, kama (desire) as Vikata, self-indulgence as Vakratunda and finally, ahankar (arrogance) as Dhumravarna. Is that not a great revealation?

However, a close analysis will show that all these eight demons live within us. Therefore, earnest worship of Lord Ganesh will help us get rid of the dreadful attributes like envy, pride, greed, anger, desire and attachment. There is another important aspect in the worship of Lord Ganesh. We offer different kinds of fruits, often considered poisonous, leaves, even thorny ones, and wild flower, signifying environment-friendly nature of our Lord.

Therefore, Lord Ganesh and his worship shall not only cleanse us, but thereby make a healthy society with elements of love, friendship, respect for each other, peace, non-violence and co-existence. The Lord inspires us to protect the fauna and flora, too. In light of this, let us welcome Lord Ganesh to our midst and worship him for the benefit of mankind and his environment.

Lord Ganesh passes on the seed

***** Location: India

Explanation

Ganga flowing down is a
late summer kigo.
Because for the rest of the times the Himalayas are covered in snow.

One story goes that the holy river Ganga was flowing down the Himalayas in immense fury and power, causing great devastation every where she went.
The people prayed to Lord Shiva to save them from Ganga - and Lord Shiva sitting in Mt. Kailash [Himalayas] makes Ganga flow through his matted hair, thus calming her down!

Every statue of Lord Shiva or pictures of Lord Shiva will depict The Ganga flowing from his hair.

Gangotri,
the origin of the River Ganges and seat of the goddess Ganga,
. WKD : Gangotri .

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

From an article by Nitin Kumar, Exotic India

Jagannatha's collection of poems is entitled 'Ganga-Lahiri', or The Waves of Ganga.
In his verses, the poet addresses the river as a mother, comforter, and supporter. A typical hymn runs as follows:

I come to you as a child to his mother.
I come as an orphan to you, moist with love.
I come without refuge to you, giver of sacred rest.
I come a fallen man to you, uplifter of all.
I come undone by disease to you, the perfect physician.
I come, my heart dry with thirst, to you, ocean of sweet wine.
Do with me whatever you will.

A river that inspires such outstanding and pious creative devotion must be some river indeed. Truly Ganga is a river that has been at the core of sacred Hindu lore and tradition since time immemorial. The esteem in which she is held and her consequent deification as a full-blown woman echoes the timeless ethos of Hindu wisdom.
