amaavas ki raat
madira mein chaand dooba
Peei sung Shiv jagey

On the darkest night
The moon drowned in ambroisa
Shiv woke with his love

raat ka madhosh aalingan
ab bhi lipta hai
ban kar jannat ka kangan

your embrace from the last night
still clings close to me
as a bracelet of heaven

... ... ...

kal raat ki supaari se
chhiley huey hoth -
paan ki saans - namkeen chumban

the betel nut from last night
scraped both our lips sore
the breath of paan* - salty kiss

*a betel leaf preparation



hindustani haiku

shab, khaalis makkhan
ghee banta raha raat bhar
seher, sej mehakey

evening, white butter
melted into ghee all night
fragrant bed at dawn

... ... ...

raat sej pur nritya kiya
baadal barsey thhey
seher mehaki sondhi hai

(you danced on my bed last night
the clouds rained all night
the morning smells of wet earth)
