Explanation

Sun
the time keeper
Daily
counting your rotations
we age
growing older by the minute.
The moon
grows from baby to full-faced moon
every month?
How is that you remain ever the same
year after year. . .
full of vigour, virility and vitality?
Maybe that’s
the reason the Hindus call you
ADITYA?
The Sun God to whom we
pray daily
each passing year
to bless
us

sooriya – another name for sun
udayan – rising

udaya sooriyan – rising sun

samdhya - literally means holding together, union – junction

so there are two samdhyas in a day .. dawn and dusk

kaal means time

and according to our sacred texts –samdhya is sacred time, and dawn and dusk are best suited for meditation and prayers

***** suriya namaskar and the gayatri mantra

Sun Salutation, Suriya Namaskar
All sessions of Yoga 'Asanas' begin with the 'Surya Namaskar' or sun salutation. It is a series of gentle flowing movements synchronized with the breath. This excellent warm up exercise consists of a sequence of positions that move the spine in various ways and promote flexibility in the limbs. It is of special benefit to beginners, to stiff people, and to the elderly, since it helps the body to gain flexibility. It also regulates the breath and focuses the mind.

Fond Memory from a Son
by Tan Arjun
As I gather my thoughts to write this article for the Centennial volume on my father Prof. Tan Yun-shan, a vast amount of memories and impressions race through my mind. After much self-debate as to what to put in black and white, I decided to write about both of my parents, since my mother was an inalienable partner of my father in whatever endeavour he undertook. This article is about both of them from the frame of reference of their children, as we viewed them and perceived them while we grew up and matured under their care into adulthood.

Gayatri Mantra
Just like the Sun annihilates darkness, so does the Gayatri Mantra destroy ignorance. The Gayatri Mantra invokes the power and radiance of the Sun to energize all earthly life, to destroy our sins and to reveal the Supreme Self to us. Krishna in the Bhagvad Geeta says: " Amongst the Mantras, I am the Gayatri"。
