Explanation
The 2002 Gujarat violence was a series of incidents including the Godhra train burning and the subsequent communal riots between Hindus and Muslims in the Indian state of Gujarat.
On 27 February 2002, the Sabarmati Express train was attacked at Godhra by a large Muslim mob as per a preplanned conspiracy. 58 Hindu pilgrims, mostly women and children returning from Ayodhya, were killed in the attack. This in turn prompted retaliatory attacks against Muslims and general communal riots on a large scale across the state, in which 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were ultimately killed and 223 more people were reported missing.
523 places of worship were damaged: 298 dargahs, 205 mosques, 17 temples, and 3 churches. Muslim-owned businesses suffered the bulk of the damage. 61,000 Muslims and 10,000 Hindus fled their homes. Preventive arrests of 17,947 Hindus and 3,616 Muslims were made.
In total 27,901 Hindus and 7,651 Muslims were arrested. Nearly 10,000 rounds of bullets were fired in police shootings that killed 93 Muslims and 77 Hindus.

A bindi (from Sanskrit bindu, meaning "a drop, small particle, dot") is a forehead decoration worn in South Asia (particularly India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Mauritius) and Southeast Asia. Traditionally it is a dot of red color applied in the center of the forehead close to the eyebrows, but it can also consist of a sign or piece of jewelry worn at this location.
Traditionally, the area between the eyebrows (where the bindi is placed) is said to be the sixth chakra, ajna, the seat of "concealed wisdom". According to followers of Hinduism, this chakra is the exit point for kundalini energy. The bindi is said to retain energy and strengthen concentration.
It is also said to protect against demons or bad luck. The bindi also represents the third eye.
The red bindi has multiple meanings which are all valid at the same time. This is also a spiritual symbol.
By one simple interpretation it is a cosmetic mark used to enhance beauty.
In meditation, this very spot between the eyebrows (Bhrumadhya) is where one focuses his/her sight, so that it helps concentration. Most images of Buddha or Hindu divinities in meditative pose with their eyes nearly closed show the gaze focused between eyebrows (other spot being the tip of the nose - naasikagra).
Swami Muktanand writes 'auspicious Kumkum or sandal wood paste is applied (between the eyebrows) out of respect for inner Guru. It is the Guru's seat. There is a chakra (center of spiritual energy within human body) here called Ajna (Aadnyaa) chakra meaning 'Command center'. Here you receive the Guru's command to go higher in Sadhana (spiritual practice) to the 'Sahasraar' (seventh and final chakra) which leads to Self realization. The flame seen at the eyebrow is called 'Guru Jyoti'.

Bara Maha - The Twelve Months

Explanation
Bara Maha means "twelve months"
Bara Maha is based on the twelve months of the Indian calendar. The changes that are brought about in the seasons and environment with the changing twelve months in bound to effect human mind and his behavior. The blossoming of flowers, lightening and thunder during the rainy season followed by perpetual drizzle, blowing of soft cool breeze is sure to bring the memories of the cover in the heart of a beloved. Therefore the theme of the Bara Maha during early period had been the state of mind of a lovelorn heroine.
The first eleven months describe the state of mind when the beloved is suffering in the separation of her lover while the reunion and the ecstasy of reunion is the spirit of the twelve month. It describes the comfort, peace and immense happiness at the long awaited union.
Sri Granth Sahib has two Bara Maha included in it. One composed by Guru Nanak Dev ji in Tukhari raag, an excellent example of describing nature. Bara Maha composed by Guru Arjan Dev ji in Raag Majh motivates a person to make his life a success through spiritual living.
The human soul is seen wailing to reunite with his original and primary source that is lord. The final peace accrues from the union with Lord. These Bara Maha compositions are the supreme form of loving worship.

2) Waisakh (April- May)
Waisakh is a season where life and death are simultaneous. The seeds of Chaitra have died to give birth to a new awareness with a sense of waiting of hope and expectation and life all around is slowly drooping. The trees are beginning to shed, the waters are receding, the birds have quieted down and sky is quiet and somber. The sheer brilliance of gold is reflected in the golden grain of wheat in the fields.

means ‘hope arises’. Just as the heat reaches its peak in the month of Jaith, and burns up the earth, what survives is one that’s firmly rooted to the earth leaving nothing but a vacuum as storms rage in with all their fury.
The thunderstorms, dark ominous clouds, raging waters but there is a hope that soon the Gods above will relent and shower this earth with their blessings for the life to flower again soon.

Explanation
Bara Maha means "twelve months"
Bara Maha is based on the twelve months of the Indian calendar. The changes that are brought about in the seasons and environment with the changing twelve months in bound to effect human mind and his behavior. The blossoming of flowers, lightening and thunder during the rainy season followed by perpetual drizzle, blowing of soft cool breeze is sure to bring the memories of the cover in the heart of a beloved. Therefore the theme of the Bara Maha during early period had been the state of mind of a lovelorn heroine.
The first eleven months describe the state of mind when the beloved is suffering in the separation of her lover while the reunion and the ecstasy of reunion is the spirit of the twelve month. It describes the comfort, peace and immense happiness at the long awaited union.
Sri Granth Sahib has two Bara Maha included in it. One composed by Guru Nanak Dev ji in Tukhari raag, an excellent example of describing nature. Bara Maha composed by Guru Arjan Dev ji in Raag Majh motivates a person to make his life a success through spiritual living.
The human soul is seen wailing to reunite with his original and primary source that is lord. The final peace accrues from the union with Lord. These Bara Maha compositions are the supreme form of loving worship.

1) Chayt (March-April)
The season of Chayt when the birds sing in quiet harmony, the serene waters flow, the flowers have bloomed to their full glory and seeds are forming. The seeds that may pave the way for another season.

2) Waisakh (April- May)
Waisakh is a season where life and death are simultaneous. The seeds of Chaitra have died to give birth to a new awareness with a sense of waiting of hope and expectation and life all around is slowly drooping. The trees are beginning to shed, the waters are receding, the birds have quieted down and sky is quiet and somber. The sheer brilliance of gold is reflected in the golden grain of wheat in the fields.

4) Asaad (June- July)...
means ‘hope arises’. Just as the heat reaches its peak in the month of Jaith, and burns up the earth, what survives is one that’s firmly rooted to the earth leaving nothing but a vacuum as storms rage in with all their fury.
The thunderstorms, dark ominous clouds, raging waters but there is a hope that soon the Gods above will relent and shower this earth with their blessings for the life to flower again soon.

But the younger daughter named, Rajni replied,
"It is God that sustains all living beings"
Hearing this reply Duni Chand was so enraged that he married Rajni to a leper. But Rajni did not care about it. She accepted the leper as her husband and served him with great love. In those days Guru Ram Das Ji was constructing a new city at Amritsar.
Rajni took the leper with him and reached Amritsar. She met the devotees of the Guru When devotees saw that her husband was leper they took pity on her and provided him a room to live. She also joined the other devotees and was deputed to cook meals in the common kitchen. She was well contented with her fate. She was always contemplating the name of God. When she was going to join his duty, she used to take her husband with her.
Making a suitable arrangement for his sitting under a shady tree, she used to go to the kitchen. One day she left him to sit under a Ber tree. When her husband the leper was sitting on the bank of the pond, he saw a pair of crows dipped down in the pool and flew away with their colour changing from black to white. Seeing this he concluded that pool did not contain an ordinary water, so he made up his mind to bathe in the tank.
He reached near the pond and dipped into the water.
When he came out he was astonished to see himself hale and healthy, He was no longer a leper. He walked as a young man and again sat under the shade of the Ber tree. When Rajni returned from langar she was unable to recognize him. When the young man convinced him her telling her the whole story; Rajni felt very happy.
They met Guru Ram Dass Ji and told him the whole story The Guru was pleased to hear it. He told Baba Budha Ji that pond was the same holy place about which Gum Amar Dass Ji had foretold. When the people of the area heard about the appearance of Netar pond they rushed to see and have a bath in it The tree under which the leper was sitting came to be known as Dukh bhanjani Beri as it relieves the pains and afflictions.
A Gurdwara temple has been built near that Bed and thousands of people take bath near that Beri.

Making a suitable arrangement for his sitting under a shady tree, she used to go to the kitchen. One day she left him to sit under a Ber tree. When her husband the leper was sitting on the bank of the pond, he saw a pair of crows dipped down in the pool and flew away with their colour changing from black to white. Seeing this he concluded that pool did not contain an ordinary water, so he made up his mind to bathe in the tank.
He reached near the pond and dipped into the water.
When he came out he was astonished to see himself hale and healthy, He was no longer a leper. He walked as a young man and again sat under the shade of the Ber tree. When Rajni returned from langar she was unable to recognize him. When the young man convinced him her telling her the whole story; Rajni felt very happy.
They met Guru Ram Dass Ji and told him the whole story The Guru was pleased to hear it. He told Baba Budha Ji that pond was the same holy place about which Gum Amar Dass Ji had foretold. When the people of the area heard about the appearance of Netar pond they rushed to see and have a bath in it The tree under which the leper was sitting came to be known as Dukh bhanjani Beri as it relieves the pains and afflictions.
A Gurdwara temple has been built near that Bed and thousands of people take bath near that Beri.

In Bihar they call it the Phagwa (Devanagari:फागवा) all of these have the same pronunciation (Falgun, Phalgun, Phalguna, Fagu, Phagwa) and in Indian community "F" is repeatedly replaced with "Ph" to generate the similar sound especially while translating Devanagari words into English.
The name Falgun is derived from the Vikram Samvat calendar and it is also used in the Hindu calendar, where it is pronounced Phalguna.

Nose Piercing in India
Though nose piercing didn't originate in India, it was brought to the country in the 16th Century from the Middle East by the Moghul emperors. In India a stud called Phul or a ring known as Nath is usually worn in the left nostril, it's sometimes joined to the ear by a chain, and in some places both nostrils are pierced.

The conventional clove-shaped nose stud is called the laung, while the small pendant suspended between the nostrils is the latkan, because of its pendulous character.
In UP the nath is adorned with two pearls and a pendulous bead to augur prosperity.
The Punjabi damsel has a gold ring strung with as many as 20 to 25 motifs. It is the shikarpuri nath.
In Bihar the nose stud is the chhuchhi or the laung.
In Maharashtra it is the guchhedar nath, which is known for its radiant beauty with pearl decorations.
Pullakku nose ring in South India (bulaag in the North) is the pendant suspended from the partition of the nostrils.
Sometimes the septum rings in rural areas and tribal society are so large that they cover a portion of the mouth and often come in the way while eating.

Nepal is the only Hindu kingdom in the world and thus the land of Lord Shiva, Lord of all Lords, for here you can feel his presence everywhere. Even in the sacred texts of the Hindus it has been stated that Mt. Kailash in the Himalayas is the abode of Lord Shiva or Mahadeva as he is also known. Shiva the Destroyer of Evil is among the most praised and worshipped of all the gods in the Hindu religion. Hindus all over the world know him through different names and forms. The country has thousands of idols and monuments, which glorify his name, the most common one being the Shiva Linga or the phallus of Shiva that represents him. For it is the Shiva linga that Hindus regard as the symbol of creation, the beginning of everything.
Shiva Ratri is the night of Lord Shiva when He himself was created by His own Divine Grace and Hindus all over the world celebrate this day with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Shiva Ratri literally means ' the night consecrated to Shiva'.
This auspicious festival falls on the fourteenth day of the waning moon in the month of Falgun, (February - March in the Gregorian calendar ). The temple of Pashupatinath in Kathmandu which is considered as one of the holiest shrines of the Hindus, glorifying Lord Shiva, thus receives more than 100,000 worshippers during the festival of Shiva Ratri. These worshippers come from far and wide to pay their respects and homage to Mahadev on his sacred day.
Pashupatinath temple is located at the eastern part of the Kathmandu valley on the banks of the holy river Bagmati. Pashupatinath, which literally means The Lord of animals is one of the many forms of the Lord. He is the guardian deity, protector of our Hindu Kingdom of Nepal, thus Shiva Ratri is one of the major festivals of Nepal. Pilgrims from all over Nepal as Pashupatinath Temple well as India come to Pashupatinath to worship and pray to the deity on his birthday and wash away all the sins committed by them. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple and tourists are only permitted to observe the festival from across the Bagmati river.
Shiva Ratri is a much anticipated festival by all Hindus. Pilgrims and yogis (holy men), from all over Southeast Asia come to Kathmandu weeks before the festival. On this holy day people fast through out the day. At dawn, worshippers take a holy bath or dip in the river and go to the temple to worship.
One of the interesting aspects of Shiva Ratri is that on this day devotees and non-devotees alike freely indulge in smoking intoxicating substances such as marijuana and bhang for it is the only day in the annual calendar when marijuana is legal.
Many people take these intoxicants in the belief that it pleases Lord Shiva for he too is said to be fond of it. Thus marijuana is taken as prasad, holy food blessed by the Gods and one can see eager tourists and faithful Nepalese flocking around the temple complex of the Ram Janaki Mandir across the Bagmati river opposite to the main temple complex of Pashupatinath lingering around sadhus and babas in the hope for some prasad from them.
The Puran, one of the many holy texts of the Hindus, tells us that if you worship Lord Shiva on this day all your sins will be forgiven. Giving an examle the puran talks about an event that occurred ages before about a hunter from Benares. This man worshipped Lord Shiva unknowingly on Shiva Ratri and he was forgiven for all his sins.
On Shiva Ratri the temple of Pashupatinath is filled with worshippers. Devotees are not distinguished as poor or rich but treated equally for Lord Shiva treats us all equally. Even the King of Nepal and the royal family pay homage to the Pashupatunath on this day along with the thousands that gather to celebrate the festival. Thus the festival of Shiva Ratri shows the devotion and faith Nepalese have towards the Hindu religion.

is a Hindu festival celebrated every year in reverence of Lord Shiva. Alternate common names/spellings include Maha Sivaratri, Shivaratri, Sivarathri, and Shivaratri. Shivaratri literally means the great night of Shiva or the night of Shiva. It is celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day of the Maagha or Phalguna month of the Hindu calendar.
Since many different calendars are followed by various ethno-linguistic groups of India, the month and the Tithi name are not uniform all over India. Celebrated in the dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha(waning moon) of the month of Maagha according to the Shalivahana or Gujarati Vikrama or Phalguna according to the Vikrama era.
The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael or Bilva/Vilvam leaves to Lord Shiva, all day fasting and an all night long vigil. In accordance with scriptural and discipleship traditions, penances are performed in order to gain boons in the practice of Yoga and meditation, in order to reach life's summum bonum steadily and swiftly.
A week long International Mandi Shivratri Fair held at Mandi in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh every year is one of the major tourist attractions in the state.

Maha Shiva Ratri or the Night of Lord Shiva, commemorates the day on which the Father of the Gods saved the world by drinking the deadly Kaalakoodum poison.
Fasting and worship marks the day for the worship of Shiva. Devotees visit the numerous Shiva Temples - both big and small - around the state and smear their bodies with holy ash while chanting prayers to the Lord. The prayers go on all through the night and early next morning, after a purifying bath, prayers are offered once again to Shiva.

Maha Shiva Raatri means the great night of Lord Shiva and it is observed on the fourteenth lunar night(chaturdasi)of the dark forthnight(Krishna Paksh) in the Hindu month of Phalgun. This corresponds to late February and early March in the English calendar.
Maha Shiva Raatri's time duration is such that the lunar day or thithi (chaturdasi in this case)must pass through midnight.A great deal of preparation is involved in order to celebrate this religious event since it requires the performance of Pooja(prayers).
Lord Shiva is the Devta or diety worshipped here. His worship is done in the form of a Lingam Pooja.
The Lingam is a stone with an oval shape and it represents the abstract form of God.
During Maha Shiva Raatri, Hindus in Trinidad observe fasting. They abstain from eating and drinking forbidden foods and they will make all the necessary preparations for the Pooja which begins at sunset.
Actually, the complete Maha Shiva Raatri Pooja consists of four individual poojas.The first Pooja starts at sunset and with two hour intervals,the remaining three is done. The last one must finish at midnight. A vigil is maintained all night until before sunrise of the next morning. Bhajans and kirtan (hymns and praises) are encouraged in order to maintain this vigil and also discourses relevant to the occasion are read.
The first Pooja culminates with the offering of milk; at the end of the second Dahee or curds are offered ; at the end of the third Ghee (cow's butter) is offered and at the end of the last Pooja, honey is offered on the Lingam.
From midnight until before sunrise next morning, Jal or water is offered on the Lingam . However, the most important article of worship in this Pooja is Bail leaves (the leaves of the wood apple tree). These leaves are exceedingly loved by Lord Shiva and the offering of same brings some form of spiritual elevation to the person who has made such an offering. In order to achieve the maximum benefits,the services of a qualified Pandit (Hindu priest) is very important in performing this Pooja.

Care should be taken in the selection of a Lingam. A Lingam with an image of Lord Shiva and /or His consort Parvati or a snake as is commonly seen, is NOT considered as a Lingam but as a Murti. Therefore, it is not appropriate to use such, as a Lingam for this purpose. The Lingam is a representation of the infinite form of God, without beginning and without end and this cannot be effectively represented by a Lingam with a human resemblance.
The offering of Jal (water) on the Lingam should NOT extend on to daytime of the following day. The word Raatri means night and any worship that extends into daytime violates the concept of night and day and constitutes sin.
Shiva Raatri.....
Shiva Raatri occurs once a month on the night of the fourteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksh or the dark forthnight.There are eleven Shiva Raatris in a year but in Malmaas, there is one more and in Kshai Maas there is another. Lord Shiva is worshipped at this time with all the grandeur of Maha Shiva Raatri.The worship of the Murti can also be done at this time.
The importance of time.....
Since Maha Shiva Raatri must go past midnight of the night in question, the chances are that the thithi or lunar day (chaturdashi in this case) might not last until the next morning. For example, it might finish at two o'clock in the morning; how does this affect the proceedings?
The celebrations can continue as normal and conclude at two o'clock in the morning or it can continue and conclude before the sun rises.This would be a matter of personal choice. In any event, both ways are in accordance with the Shastric (recommended) principles and are acceptable.

For it is the Shiva linga that Hindus regard as the symbol of creation, the beginning of everything.
Shiva Ratri is the night of Lord Shiva when He himself was created by His own Divine Grace and Hindus all over the world celebrate this day with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Shiva Ratri literally means ' the night consecrated to Shiva'.
This auspicious festival falls on the fourteenth day of the waning moon in the month of Falgun, (February - March in the Gregorian calendar ). The temple of Pashupatinath in Kathmandu which is considered as one of the holiest shrines of the Hindus, glorifying Lord Shiva, thus receives more than 100,000 worshippers during the festival of Shiva Ratri. These worshippers come from far and wide to pay their respects and homage to Mahadev on his sacred day.
Pashupatinath temple is located at the eastern part of the Kathmandu valley on the banks of the holy river Bagmati. Pashupatinath, which literally means The Lord of animals is one of the many forms of the Lord. He is the guardian deity, protector of our Hindu Kingdom of Nepal, thus Shiva Ratri is one of the major festivals of Nepal. Pilgrims from all over Nepal as Pashupatinath Temple well as India come to Pashupatinath to worship and pray to the deity on his birthday and wash away all the sins committed by them. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple and tourists are only permitted to observe the festival from across the Bagmati river.
Shiva Ratri is a much anticipated festival by all Hindus. Pilgrims and yogis (holy men), from all over Southeast Asia come to Kathmandu weeks before the festival. On this holy day people fast through out the day. At dawn, worshippers take a holy bath or dip in the river and go to the temple to worship.
One of the interesting aspects of Shiva Ratri is that on this day devotees and non-devotees alike freely indulge in smoking intoxicating substances such as marijuana and bhang for it is the only day in the annual calendar when marijuana is legal.
Many people take these intoxicants in the belief that it pleases Lord Shiva for he too is said to be fond of it. Thus marijuana is taken as prasad, holy food blessed by the Gods and one can see eager tourists and faithful Nepalese flocking around the temple complex of the Ram Janaki Mandir across the Bagmati river opposite to the main temple complex of Pashupatinath lingering around sadhus and babas in the hope for some prasad from them.
The Puran, one of the many holy texts of the Hindus, tells us that if you worship Lord Shiva on this day all your sins will be forgiven. Giving an examle the puran talks about an event that occurred ages before about a hunter from Benares. This man worshipped Lord Shiva unknowingly on Shiva Ratri and he was forgiven for all his sins.
On Shiva Ratri the temple of Pashupatinath is filled with worshippers. Devotees are not distinguished as poor or rich but treated equally for Lord Shiva treats us all equally. Even the King of Nepal and the royal family pay homage to the Pashupatunath on this day along with the thousands that gather to celebrate the festival. Thus the festival of Shiva Ratri shows the devotion and faith Nepalese have towards the Hindu religion.

Shivaratri literally means the great night of Shiva or the night of Shiva. It is celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day of the Maagha or Phalguna month of the Hindu calendar.
Since many different calendars are followed by various ethno-linguistic groups of India, the month and the Tithi name are not uniform all over India. Celebrated in the dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha(waning moon) of the month of Maagha according to the Shalivahana or Gujarati Vikrama or Phalguna according to the Vikrama era.
The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael or Bilva/Vilvam leaves to Lord Shiva, all day fasting and an all night long vigil. In accordance with scriptural and discipleship traditions, penances are performed in order to gain boons in the practice of Yoga and meditation, in order to reach life's summum bonum steadily and swiftly.
A week long International Mandi Shivratri Fair held at Mandi in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh every year is one of the major tourist attractions in the state.

Maha Shiva Ratri or the Night of Lord Shiva, commemorates the day on which the Father of the Gods saved the world by drinking the deadly Kaalakoodum poison.
Fasting and worship marks the day for the worship of Shiva. Devotees visit the numerous Shiva Temples - both big and small - around the state and smear their bodies with holy ash while chanting prayers to the Lord. The prayers go on all through the night and early next morning, after a purifying bath, prayers are offered once again to Shiva.
The most famous of the Maha Shiva Ratri celebrations are held in Aluva, on the banks of the Periyar River.
An idol of the Lord is created on the sandy bank of the river for the thousands of pilgrims, who visit it to offer their prayers. People from all walks of life assemble for the great fair that is held. An exhibition and sale of goods is on during the celebrations. Cultural shows and dances are staged through the night to keep the pilgrims awake. Many devotees offer sacrifices to their ancestors in the morning after the holy night.

Maha Shiva Raatri means the great night of Lord Shiva and it is observed on the fourteenth lunar night(chaturdasi)of the dark forthnight(Krishna Paksh) in the Hindu month of Phalgun. This corresponds to late February and early March in the English calendar.
Maha Shiva Raatri's time duration is such that the lunar day or thithi (chaturdasi in this case)must pass through midnight.A great deal of preparation is involved in order to celebrate this religious event since it requires the performance of Pooja(prayers).
Lord Shiva is the Devta or diety worshipped here. His worship is done in the form of a Lingam Pooja.
The Lingam is a stone with an oval shape and it represents the abstract form of God.
During Maha Shiva Raatri, Hindus in Trinidad observe fasting. They abstain from eating and drinking forbidden foods and they will make all the necessary preparations for the Pooja which begins at sunset.
Actually, the complete Maha Shiva Raatri Pooja consists of four individual poojas.The first Pooja starts at sunset and with two hour intervals,the remaining three is done. The last one must finish at midnight. A vigil is maintained all night until before sunrise of the next morning. Bhajans and kirtan (hymns and praises) are encouraged in order to maintain this vigil and also discourses relevant to the occasion are read.
The first Pooja culminates with the offering of milk; at the end of the second Dahee or curds are offered ; at the end of the third Ghee (cow's butter) is offered and at the end of the last Pooja, honey is offered on the Lingam.
From midnight until before sunrise next morning, Jal or water is offered on the Lingam . However, the most important article of worship in this Pooja is Bail leaves (the leaves of the wood apple tree). These leaves are exceedingly loved by Lord Shiva and the offering of same brings some form of spiritual elevation to the person who has made such an offering. In order to achieve the maximum benefits,the services of a qualified Pandit (Hindu priest) is very important in performing this Pooja.

Lord Shiva grants His blessings to His devotees who worships Him on the night of Maha Shiva Raatri.Worshiping Him on this night promotes spiritual growth.

The Nishan Sahib is a Sikh holy triangular flag made of cotton or silk cloth, with a tassel at its end. The word, Nishan means symbol, and the flag is hoisted on a tall flagpole, outside most Gurudwaras. The flagpole itself covered with fabric, ends with a two-edged dagger (khanda) on top.
The emblem on the flag is known as Khanda, which depicts a double-edged sword called a khanda (☬) in the centre, a chakkar which is circular, and flanked by two single-edged swords, or kirpans.
Traditional symbol of the Khalsa Panth, the Nishan Sahib can be seen from far away, signifying the presence of Khalsa in the neighbourhood. It is taken down every Baisakhi, and replaced with a fresh flag, and the flagpole refurbished.

The background colour of the Nishan Sahib during the early phase of Sikh history was red. Its colour underwent a change, from white to saffron, in the hands of Guru Hargobind and it was hoisted for the first time at Akal Takhat Sahib in the year 1609 CE. However, it is steel blue in colour at Gurudwaras managed by Nihangs.
Like a Flag of any institution, this Flag symbolizes the presence of the Khalsa and hence is hoisted at every Gurdwara premises. Therefore, anybody in need of help. However, with the Khalsa now being non-functional, the Gurdwaras serve the purpose of congregational meeting, Langar and lodging.

Though, during the next 9 years of his life, Guru Gobind Singh remained the Commander-in-chief of the Khalsa.
The Khalsa is also the name of nation of sikhs.
The Khalsa has responsibilities of leader, hence parliament, and defence.

sometimes called a war quoit, is a throwing weapon from India. Its shape is of a flat metal hoop with a sharp outer edge from 12–30 centimetres (4.7–12 in) in diameter. It is also known as chalikar.

The kirpan
( Punjabi: ਕਿਰਪਾਨ kirpān) is a ceremonial sword or dagger carried by orthodox Sikhs. It is a religious commandment given by Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth Guru of Sikhism) at the Baisakhi Amrit Sanchar (a holy religious ceremony that formally baptizes a Sikh) in CE 1699, all baptised Sikhs (Khalsa) must wear a kirpan at all times.[citation needed]. The word Kirpan (Gurmukhi: ਕਿਰਪਾਨ ) has two roots - the first root is: Kirpa (ਕਿਰਪਾ ) which means "Mercy, grace, compassion, kindness" and the second root is Aan (ਆਨ ) which in turn means "Honor, grace, dignity". So together the word stands for "the dignity and honor of compassion, kindness and mercy"

Nihang is a Persian word meaning crocodile.
Nihangs were suicide squads of the Mughal army and wore blue uniforms. The Sikhs took the name and the uniform from theMughals. Nihangs constitute an order of Sikhs who, abandoning the fear of death, are ever ready for martyrdom and remain unsullied by worldly possessions. A Nihang is one who has nothing and is free from anxiety. The order is said to have been founded by Guru Gobind Singh himself as a fighting body of the Khalsa. The Nihangs were also called Akalis (servitors of the Timeless God) which term has now become synonymous with the members of a political party in Punjab.
(Most of them wear blue turbans).
Nihangs can be recognized from a distance as they wear dark blue robes with their legs bare below the knees and high blue and yellow turbans laced with steel discs. They usually carry spears, swords, daggers and shields. They use a charming vocabulary of Braggadocio, which has found its way into the Punjabi language.
Akali/Nihang
The sect of the Akalis differs essentially from all other Sikh orders in being a militant organisation, corresponding to the Nagas or Gosains among the Hindus. Their foundation is ascribed to Guru Govind Singh himself, and they steadfastly opposed Banda's attempted innovations. The term 'Akali' is sometimes said to be derived from 'Akal-purusha' - 'worshipper of the Eternal.' But Akal means 'deathless', i.e. 'God', and Akali is simply 'God worshipper.' The Akali wear blue chequered dresses, and bangles or bracelets of steel round their wrists, and quoits of steel in their lofty conical blue turbans, together with miniature daggers, knives, and an iron chain.

There are four wedding rounds in the Sikh marriage ceremony. Its called Lavan (the marriage Hymns).
Each of the four Laav has a special significance and describes the marriage of the soul-bride to the divine husband. The hymns outline the progressive stages of the awakening soul-bride as she advances spiritually to ultimately blend with the divine groom in the dawning realization of her divine destiny. The Lavan hymns are compositions of Guru Raam Das, and were written for the occasion of his own wedding to Bibi Bhani.
