*****************************
Explanation

A babbler is a bird, with the common name seven sisters in English and seven brothers (saath bhai) in Hindi. The common names come from their propensity to hang around in groups , and often very noisy groups (hence "babbler").

Johannes Manjrekar

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

quote
The Jungle Babbler (Turdoides striata)
is an Old World babbler found in the Indian Subcontinent. They are gregarious birds that forage in small groups of six to ten birds, a habit that has given them the popular name of Seven Sisters or Saath bhai in Hindi with cognates in other regional languages which means "seven brothers".

The Jungle Babbler is a common resident breeding bird in most parts of the Indian Subcontinent and is often seen in gardens within large cities as well as in forested areas. In the past, the Orange-billed Babbler, Turdoides rufescens, of Sri Lanka was considered to be a race of this babbler, but is elevated to a species.

The species was described in 1823 under the name of Cossyphus striatus and was based on a specimen from Bengal.

These birds are gregarious and very social. They sometimes form the core of a mixed-species foraging flock. They feed mainly on insects, but also eats grains, nectar and berries.
The groups maintain territories and will defend it against neighbours but will sometimes tolerate them. For their size, they are long lived and have been noted to live as long as 16.5 years in captivity.

These birds are very common near towns and cities particularly in northern India and are well known for their habit of moving in groups giving them the local name of "Sath Bhai" which means seven brethren but translated by the English in India to "Seven sisters". Visitors to India were very likely to notice these vocal and active birds

Amla - Indian gooseberry

***** Location: India
***** Season: Autumn
***** Category: Plant

*****************************
Explanation

Phyllanthus emblica (syn. Emblica officinalis),
the Indian gooseberry, or aamla from Sanskrit amalika,
is a deciduous tree of the Phyllanthaceae family. It is known for its edible fruit of the same name.

Ripening in autumn, the berries are harvested by hand after climbing to upper branches bearing the fruits. The taste of Indian gooseberry is sour, bitter and astringent, and it is quite fibrous. In India, it is common to eat gooseberries steeped in salt water and turmeric to make the sour fruits palatable. It is also used to straighten hair.

According to Hindu tradition,
Saint Adi Shankara composed and recited Kanakadhara stotram in praise of Goddess Mahalakshmi to make a poor Brahmin lady get wealth, for a single amla presented to him as Bhiksha by that lady on an auspicious Dwadashi day.

According to a Tamil legend,
AvvaiyarTamil: ஔவையார்), a female poet, ethicist and political activist of the Sangam period was gifted by one amla to her by King Athiyaman which will give her a long life.

Medicinal use

In traditional Indian medicine, dried and fresh fruits of the plant are used. All parts of the plant are used in various Ayurvedic/Unani medicine (Jawarish amla) herbal preparations, including the fruit, seed, leaves, root, bark and flowers. According to Ayurveda, aamla fruit is sour (amla) and astringent (kashaya) in taste (rasa), with sweet (madhura), bitter (tikta) and pungent (katu) secondary tastes (anurasas).
Its qualities (gunas) are light (laghu) and dry (ruksha), the postdigestive effect (vipaka) is sweet (madhura), and its energy (virya) is to cooling (shita).[12]

*****************************
Explanation

quote
A damaru (Skt.damaru; Devanagari: डमरु) or damru
is a small two-headed drum, used in Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism.

In Hinduism

The damaru is very common throughout the Indian subcontinent. The damaru is known as a power drum, and when played, it is believed to generate spiritual energy. It is associated with the Hindu deity Shiva. It is believed that Sanskrit language was recognized by the drumbeats of the damaru (see Shiva Sutra for the sounds), and His performance of the cosmic dance of tandava. The damaru is used by itinerant musicians of all stripes, due to its small portable size.

In the shield shape of some damarus, the triangular upward representation also symbolizes male procreativity (the Lingam), and the downward round representation symbolizes the female procreativity (the Yoni). Symbolically, the creation of the world begins when the lingam and yoni meet at the midpoint of the damaru, and the destruction takes place when they separate from each other.

Tibetan Skull Damaru
The skull (thöpa) damaru is made from a male and female skull bone or calvarium, cut well above the area of the ear, and joined at their apex.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Damru is one of the attributes of several deities and gods (of Hindus), particularly of Shiva. Damru is a small hourglass shaped drum, and is particularly associated with Shiva in his aspect as the Nataraja, performing the cosmic dance of tandava. The sound of damru represents the primeval sound and the rhythm from which, according to cosmology, the universe emerges and in which it dissolves into, before re-emerging again.

Indian Musical Instrument Damaru is the most common hour-glass drum in India. There are two drumheads on each side of the resonator which are laced together with cord. Near the centre of the lacing are two loose knoted cords. The knots on each end strike both heads to produce a rattling sound. This is affected by rotating the drum rapidly in alternating directions. The pitch is bent by squeezing the lacing. The damaru has very strong cultural associations. It is strongly associated with the God Shiva and sadhus ( Hindu religious men).

The Resonator is Made of brass and the height of Damru is around 6"
The weight of damru varies from 250-330 gms.

Explanation

RAG CHANDRAKAUNS (a.k.a. CHANDRAKOSH)

Chandrakauns is a very beautiful and striking rag. It is also surprisingly easy to perform. One should keep in mind, that there are actually two versions of Chandrakauns. There is an old obsolete version, and there is the modern version.

The name Chandrakauns is interesting. The prefix "chandra" means "moon". Although the etymology of the term "kauns" is obscure, it generally is used to represent five note rags. There are several forms of both pronunciation and spelling, Chandrakosh is the second most common pronunciation.

... For quite some time Chandrakauns has been a popular rag for the lahara. The lahara, also known as the naghma (nagma), is a repetitive melody used in the accompaniment of tabla solos and in kathak pieces. Bollywood in turn has picked up on this, and has further reinforced the association by frequently using Chandrakauns based laharas in scenes that depict traditional tawaifs (an Indian version of the geisha) and traditional kathak dances.

Independence Day in India, August 15, 1947

***** Location: India
***** Season: Monsoon
***** Category: Observance

*****************************
Explanation

August 15th – 1947

A day to be remembered by all Indians.

But for my family – my parents got married on 22nd August 1947, a week after India regained her independence and my mother will always say that the whole country was lit and celebrating her wedding!
My father’s famous quote – " a week after India got her Independence, I lost mine to this girl ! "

When Mahatma Gandhi, whose role in India and her freedom struggle is well known, was shot on 30th January 1948 . . . India mourned. My mother talks about the people all over India being glued to their radios – shell shocked.

My mother wept for the first time after her marriage – she said.

India’s Independence Day is August 15th

But what I want to say is that on 14th of August one suddenly remembers our Independence Day ...
And you look around and find that people have scant respect for all those who fought for our freedom . . . or for the things that they held so dear . . .

And that is the reason I put 14th august in the haiku below . . .

Kala Ramesh

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

With the decision by Britain to withdraw from the Indian subcontinent, the Congress Party and Muslim League agreed in June 1947 to a partition of India along religious lines. Under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act, India and Pakistan were established as independent dominions with predominantly Hindu areas allocated to India and predominantly Muslim areas to Pakistan.

After India's independence on August 15, 1947, India received most of the subcontinent's 562 widely scattered polities, or princely states, as well as the majority of the British provinces, and parts of three of the remaining provinces. Muslim Pakistan received the remainder. Pakistan consisted of a western wing, with the approximate boundaries of modern Pakistan, and an eastern wing, with the boundaries of present-day Bangladesh.

Explanation

Rajanigandha
"The Fragrance of the Night" in Sanskrit

They have an intense, almost magical sweet scent when they blossom at night.

The tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa)
is a perennial plant related to the agaves, extracts of which are used as a middle note in perfumery. The common name derives from the Latin tuberosa, meaning swollen or tuberous in reference to its root system. It consists of about 12 species. Polianthes means "many flowers" in Greek language.

The tuberose is a night-blooming plant thought to be native to Mexico along with every other species of Polianthes. It grows in elongated spikes up to 45 cm (18 in) long that produce clusters of fragrant waxy white flowers that bloom from the bottom towards the top of the spike. It has long, bright green leaves clustered at the base of the plant and smaller, clasping leaves along the stem.

Members of the closely related genus Manfreda are often called "tuberoses".

Rakhi, is a festival primarily observed in India, which celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters. It is also called Rakhi Purnima in most of India. It is also celebrated in some parts of Pakistan. The festival is observed by Hindus, Sikhs and some Muslims.

The central ceremony involves the tying of a rakhi (sacred thread) by a sister on her brother's wrist. This symbolizes the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-being, and the brother's lifelong vow to protect her.
The festival falls on the full moon day (Shravan Poornima) of the Shravan month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar.
It grew in popularity after Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen of Chittor, sent a rakhi to the Mughal emperor Humayun when she required his help.

Carnatic music
(Sanskrit: Karnāṭaka saṃgīta) is a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent, with its area roughly confined to four modern states of India: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. It is one of two main sub-genres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu traditions; the other sub-genre being Hindustani music, which emerged as a distinct form because of Persian and Islamic influences in North India. In contrast to Hindustani music, the main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in gāyaki (singing) style.

Hindustani classical music
(Hindi: हिन्दुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीत्, Urdu: کلاسیکی موسیقی) is the Hindustani or North Indian style of Indian classical music found throughout the northern Indian subcontinent. The style is sometimes called North Indian classical music or Shāstriya Sangeet. It is a tradition that originated in Vedic ritual chants and has been evolving since the 12th century CE, primarily in what is now North India and Pakistan, and to some extent in Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan. Today, it is one of the two subgenres of Indian classical music, the other being Carnatic music, the classical tradition of South India.

The Rhythm of Music -
A Magical and Mystical Harmony

The great god Shiva once chanced upon his wife Parvati reposing most gracefully. Her breathing was like soft music; the exquisite bosom rising and falling in rhythm. Her arms and wrists laden with bangles caused music by their motion. Shiva was intoxicated by this ravishing vision, and watched her for a long time in silence. Such was the impression created in his mind that he found no peace until he discovered a way of making a permanent record of the beauty observed.

The result was the veena (vina), a musical instrument, whose long neck represents the straight lithe form of Parvati, and the two supporting gourds her breasts, the metal frets her bracelets, and the most expressive of all, the sound generated by this instrument is said to recreate Parvati's own, rhythmic breathing.
