The tree is sometimes called the "tree of sorrow", because the flowers lose their brightness during daytime; the scientific name arbor-tristis also means "sad tree".
The flowers are gently shaken from the tree and used as offerings in temples.
The flowers can also be used as a source of yellow dye for clothing.
The flower is the official flower of the state of West Bengal, India, and for Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand.

Mythology
Parijat appears in several Hindu myths. In one myth, which appears in Srimad Bhagavatam, the Mahabharata and the Vishnu Purana, Parijat appeared as the result of the Samudra manthan (Churning of the Milky Ocean). In another myth, Parijat was brought to earth by Krishna from Indra's garden.

In Hindu mythology, there is a story involving Lord Krishna about a parijat and Krishna's two wives, Satyabhama and Rukmini. Satyabhama wanted this "Parijat" tree from the Heaven to be planted in her garden. Rukmini too, took a fancy to the flower. Krishna, wanting to keep both his wives happy, planted this tree so that the flowers fell in Rukmini’s garden while the tree remained in Satyabhama’s garden.

The tree was planted in the garden of Indra, the Lord of Heavens. Even as Krishna stole a branch of the tree he was spotted by Indra. However, Indra desisted from placing a curse on Krishna since he was an incarnation of Vishnu. Still, Indra put forth a curse on the stolen branch that it will never bear fruit even though the flowers may bloom on the tree. Since the day the tree was planted at Barabanki (the wives' garden), it flowers but does not reproduce, because it has no seeds and the branch cannot take root.

One special Parijaat Tree
Village Kintur, about 38 km east of district headquarters Barabanki was named after Kunti, mother of the Pandavas. There are a number ancient temples and their remains around this place. Nearby a temple established by Kunti, is a special tree called Parijaat. There are a number of sayings about this tree, which have popular acceptance. One being the Parijaat Tree.
This tree blossoms very occasionally, with very few flower, but when it does, that is after the 'Ganga Dashehra', spreads its fragrance far and wide. The age of this tree is said to be 1000 to 5000 years. The perimeter of the trunk of this tree is around 50 feet and height of around 45 feet.

Parijat with white petals and deep orange stem is believed to be a flower of the heavenly garden (Nandan Kanan). Lord Vishnu is fone of this flower. It has a mild enchanting aroma.

"Rtam" san is one of the most commonly occuring words in the Vedas.
Western scholars tended to give it various meanings idiosyncratically to accomodate their rather dull view of the vedic ages as primitive animistic natives reciting vague things, engaged in barbaric sacrifices and to whom church doctrines must be taught. This is not surprising since majority of them were church send scholars who wanted to convert the whole of India to Christianity.

RTAM IS COSMIC SELF EVIDENT TRUTH .
The Divine Order Of Things ~

Something Like "Mu" ~ a very heavy power word!

The English word "Rhythm" is derived from this word.
The Sanskrit [RTU} [Season] too is derived from Rtam (ritam).
"Yasya tad Rtam anusarathi tad Rtu" [ That which moves in accordance (co-union) with (obeys} The Rtam is [Rtu ] My etymological reading~

The Woman who becomes re-aligned to the seasons, one who starts her menstural periods is called RTU-MATI. One, who in whom the cosmic season shows, one in whom the Rtam pervades and manifests.
Rtu + Mati { "Mati" Is Divine Intelligence]
So literally one who becomes universally intelligent [aware] about Rtam.

"Yasya Saam Rtam pravishyathi saa Rtu-mati"
In which woman the Rtam has entered she is Rtu-mati
[Again my deconstruction]

Sri Aurobindo has clarified this Truth about "Rtam" remarkably in His two books "Hymns To The Mystic Fire" and "The Secret Of The Vedas" in relation to the Vedic Scriptures. His esteemed disciple
Kaapaali Shaastri (a Vedic Scholar) has translated the vedas in their divine metaphysical sense as envisioned and demonstarted by Sri Aurobindo who is considered a Yuga Avataar ~
He is my Guru also: he initiated me in a dream thirty years ago.

This category of record was created for the first time in 16 yr old history of the Limca book !

Paapads – The Spicy Indian crackers to crunch n munch!!

you fry them or roast them-
eat them with rice
or you eat them when hungry

you spice them up with cut onions and chilly powder
or you crush them up on a curry as decoration

you have them with your meals
or you eat them after –
any-time and all-time to crunch n munch

they come flavored
with pepper or garlic onion
with punjabi masala or red chillies!

Indians love them in all these avatars!

All over India – in each and every state the making of Papads is BIG business.

Any write on papads would be incomplete without mentioning the Shri Mahila Griha Udyog, the makers of the famous Lijjat Papad.

This is an organisation which symbolises the strength of a woman- a unique organisation of the woman, by the woman, for the woman!

papads or papadum are spicy Indian crackers. while spicy by American standards they are really bland and mild by Indian standards and most American can eat them.
papads are like the American food popcorn. you have to prepare the food before eating it. but as in the case of popping popcorn papads are very easy to cook.

Papad (also papadam, poppadom, papadum, and appalam) is an Indian and Sri Lankan flatbread. Typically, it is prepared using black gram bean flour, rice flour, or lentil flour with salt and peanut oil added. The ingredients are made into a dough and formed into a thin, round shape similar to a tortilla. As the dough is prepared, the papadum can be seasoned with a variety of different ingredients such as chilies, cumin, garlic, black pepper, or other spices.

Papadums are cooked by deep-frying in oil, which causes them to expand and crispen. They may also be cooked by roasting them over an open flame, in a toaster oven, or in a microwave oven. Depending on the cooking method they may be either soft and moist or crisp in texture.

Most often served as a complement to a main dish, they are also eaten as a snack or as an appetizer to be topped with chutney, various dips or salsas. Commonly made in different sizes, the smaller ones are for snacks and the larger variety may be used as a food wrap.

Roti is generally a South Asian bread made from stone ground wholemeal flour, traditionally known as atta flour, that originated and is consumed in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh,Nepal, and Sri Lanka..The word roti is derived from the Sanskrit word (roṭikā), meaning "bread."The traditional flat bread originating from the Indian subcontinent is commonly known as roti; pronounced "rho tee". It is normally eaten with cooked vegetables it can be called a carrier for curries or cooked vegetables. It is made most often from wheat flour, cooked on a flat or slightly concave iron griddle called a tawa. It is similar to the tortilla in appearance. Like breads around the world, roti is a staple accompaniment to other foods, and may be spread with ghee (clarified butter).
